Vinohrady: Prague’s Most Elegant Neighbourhood for a Date

Most visitors never leave the historic centre, and that is exactly why Vinohrady feels like a secret. Ten minutes from Wenceslas Square, this residential district in Prague 2 has wide tree-lined streets, beautifully restored art nouveau apartment houses and a relaxed, grown-up atmosphere. It is where Prague’s locals go for dinner, and it is one of the most pleasant places in the city to spend an evening with an elegant companion.

A district built for wine

The name gives it away: Vinohrady means “vineyards”, and the slopes here were once covered with vines planted for the Bohemian kings. Today the tradition lives on in the many small wine bars along Mánesova, Vinohradská and the side streets around Náměstí Míru. Most of them serve Moravian whites and reds by the glass, with friendly staff who are happy to explain what is in your glass. It is an easy, unpretentious setting for a first conversation.

Náměstí Míru and the Church of St Ludmila

The heart of the district is Náměstí Míru, Peace Square, dominated by the neo-Gothic Church of St Ludmila and the Vinohrady Theatre. In the evening the square is calm and softly lit, and in December it hosts one of the most charming Christmas markets in Prague, far less crowded than the Old Town. A walk around the square is a natural way to start or end a date.

Riegrovy sady at sunset

A few minutes north lies Riegrovy sady, a sloping park with one of the best free views of Prague Castle. On summer evenings locals bring a blanket and watch the sun set behind the castle. For a more comfortable version, the park’s terrace offers drinks with the same view. It is a perfect place to meet before dinner, especially if your companion is joining you from another part of the city.

Dinner in Vinohrady

The restaurant scene here is varied and refreshingly local: modern bistros, Italian trattorias, Asian kitchens and classic Czech pubs in renovated interiors. Prices are lower than in the centre and tables are easier to find, but it is still wise to book for Friday and Saturday. Ask for a quiet table by the window and take your time; nobody in Vinohrady is in a hurry.

Why stay or meet here

Vinohrady is part of Prague 2, so outcalls to hotels and apartments in this district are included in our standard rates. Several boutique hotels and stylish serviced apartments make it an excellent base if you prefer a quieter, more residential feel. Your companion can meet you at the hotel, at a wine bar or at the park; just let us know your plans when you book your date.

Vinohrady is Prague without the postcards: elegant, relaxed and full of places where a conversation can last all evening.
