Prague Castle and Malá Strana: A Romantic Afternoon

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle complex in the world, and the Lesser Town below it is one of the most romantic neighbourhoods in Europe. An afternoon exploring both, ideally with a charming companion, is the perfect introduction to the city.

Start at the top

Take a taxi to the castle in the early afternoon. Walk through the courtyards, visit St Vitus Cathedral and look down from the castle ramparts over a sea of red roofs.

The palace gardens

From spring to autumn the terraced gardens below the castle are open to visitors. Baroque staircases, fountains and quiet benches with views over the city make them one of the loveliest places in Prague.

Down to Malá Strana

Walk down Nerudova Street with its old house signs, or take the quieter Old Castle Steps. At the bottom, Malá Strana Square and St Nicholas Church show baroque Prague at its finest.

Coffee and cake

Stop at a café on a quiet square, then continue to Kampa Island and the river. From there it is only a short walk across Charles Bridge to dinner in the Old Town.

Prague Castle is best seen from below at night and from above in the afternoon. Do both, and you have seen the soul of the city.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the streets are steep and cobbled.
  • Visit the cathedral early to avoid queues.
  • The castle area is free to walk around; only some interiors require tickets.
